After doing various studies of skulls, I started wanted to transform them more into something figurative. "Portrait of Death" was the first one where I made a point of doing that, trying to get a living quality in the skull, not just replicating an object on a shelf. I continued that in "Seeing Through the Fire", but I wanted to get it looking like it was looking at something. The stuff that I used to prop it up to get it at the angle I wanted was the inspiration for the way the neck looks.
